History, in the words of Prof. Babatunde Fafunwa is, ‘’to a people what memory is to the individual. A people with no knowledge of their past would suffer from collective amnesia, groping blindly into the future without the guide post of precedence to shape their course’’.

In response to the marginalization of African Americans’ achievements in textbook and other historical reviews, African American Historian, Carter G. Woodson, pioneered in 1926, the Negro History Week, to celebrate African American history as well as the contributions and achievements of the African diaspora.

The Negro History Week later evolved to a month-long celebration known as Black History Month, celebrated every year throughout the month of February.  In 1976, American president, Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month, urging everyone to ‘’ seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black American in every area of endeavor throughout our history’’.

Without the black civilization, there would have not been any technological and scientific progress and breakthrough. The contribution of the black civilization to humanity is compared to none. In fact as said Marcus Garvey, ‘’ the world is indebted to Africa’’. The black civilization has offered its knowledge and science to the world. Tombouctou in Mali was the world first university, and Aristote pointed out that ‘’ Egypt is the cradle of Mathematics and Ancient Egyptians were extremely black’’. Great Greek sages like Pythagoras, Plato, Thales, Edox, Democritus, Strabo, Hippocrates, Lycurgus, Solon, and Herodotus have all studied in Ancient Egypt and Herodotus attested that ‘’Ancient Egyptians had a black skin and a kinky hair’’.

Pythagoras spent 22 years in Egypt to study the science of numbers. Plato and Edox spent 13 years in Saa the Egyptian city of the Basaa people to study geometry, theology and the religious science. When Plato completed his studies in Egypt, he went back to Greece and told the Greeks: ‘‘You Greeks you are small children, there is no wise man among you’’. Democritus spent 5 years in Egypt to study astronomy. Thales studied in the Egyptian city of Men-Pes. Strabo studied geography in the Egyptian city of Saa. Hippocrates studied medical science in the Egyptian city of Men-Pes 500 years before Christ. Lycurgus and Solon studied the science of legislation and governance. Herodotus studied history in Egypt and he became the father of contemporary history.

Throughout history there have been many attempts to hide and deny the black race’s contribution to humanity. Black manuscripts and archives were stolen during the Arabs and Western invasion of Africa, and its greatest library Alexandria which was the world greatest library was purposefully set on fire. Due to the ideology of Racism the black race ‘s contribution to humanity has been denied. In His Dakar’s speech in 2007, the former French president Nicolas Sarkozy said: ‘’ Africa did not enter history’’, others have even said that Africa has no history, for instance it is the case of the white historian Trevor Roper who said: ‘’Africa has no history’’. Contrary to all these racist declarations supported by no scientific evidence, the European Egyptologist Mr Volney pointed out that: ‘’ This race of black people, our slaves and the subject of our scornfulness, it is from this same race that we own our arts, sciences and even up to the usage of our  language’’.

The objective here is neither to show the glorious past and immense knowledge of ancient black people, pyramids of Egypt and Sudan and the house of stone in Zimbabwe are still standing to attest this glorious past and immense knowledge. Nor to show the contribution of ancient black people to humanity there is already a vast documentation in this regard. The purpose of this is to show the African American participation and contribution in the technological and scientific progress and breakthrough of the 19th century that has been hidden by the evil of slavery.

In my history class in form 4, I was taught the scientific and technological progress and breakthrough of the 19th century. The history teacher taught us for instance that the combustion engine was invented by Mr Andrew J.Beard, he also taught us that the electric lamp was invented by Joseph. Nicholas and Lewis H. Latimer. None of us including the History teacher knew that these inventors were black people, we all knew that these inventors were white people because they carry white name. That is why in Africa we see black people venerate white people, for them white people are second to God, there is an African proverb that says: ‘’ only death has overcome the white man’’.

Looking at the technological and scientific breakthrough of the 19th,century, Africans are very far from realizing that their black brothers are also among these great inventors.  This is due to slavery that forced African people to carry white names. When Africans were stolen from Africa and brought to Europe and Americas and turned into slaves, they were forced to carry slave owner’s names and these names have remained till today throughout the black diaspora. This is one of the causes why Africans and the rest of the world are not aware of black inventions. Also during slavery, patents were not given to slaves; only free slaves were allowed to own their inventions. So a discovery or an invention made by a black slave was automatically attributed to his white master.

What is really surprising and what we must all praise is that, due to racism black people could not easily access knowledge, there were restrictions and limitations on their right to knowledge. Yet they were able to come up with some of the greatest scientific and technological inventions. Besides these inventions, it is important to mention black scientists like David Blackwell who was awarded the John Von Newman’s prize of the best mathematician, and Williams Arthur Lewis who was awarded the Nobel Prize of economy. Also black scientists like Lloyd Albert Quaterman, Rallph Gardener, Eward A.Russel, Moddie Taylor, Harold Delaney, Benjamin Scott, J . Ernest Wilkins and Jaspar Jeffries have participated in the fabrication of the atomic bomb, however this is not something black people are proud of.  Here bellow is a non-exhaustive list of black inventions since the 19th century.
